Tour operators Thomas Cook offer 84p a night accommodation in Marmaris, Turkey

By Clare Campbell in Holiday Accident and Travel Claims on Wednesday, September 9, 2009

In my post of 4 March 2009 I talked about the increase in consumers purchasing cheap all-inclusive holidays to non-EU destinations and the potential consequences if things go wrong.

An article in the Daily Mail  raised my concerns further by highlighting the current cut prices deals currently on offer to such destinations as Turkey, Goa and the United States. The article states that for example, tour operators Thomas Cook are offering 14 nights self-catering accommodation in a studio apartment in Marmaris, Turkey for £23.28, or a staggering 84p per night! Obviously flights and transfers would have to be purchased on top but this still demonstrates a shocking reduction in prices for the forthcoming holiday season.

As a travel litigation specialist at Pannone LLP I am obviously concerned that there will be a dangerous link between these cut price holiday deals and a discernible fall in basic safety and hygiene standards. This could lead to an increase in complaints regarding personal injury or sub-standard food and drink resulting in sickness such as gastric illness, vomiting, diarrhoea or salmonella.

As I have previously noted, while these offers look extremely attractive in the current economic climate, there is a real risk that holidaymakers will get a lot more than they bargained for.

If you have suffered from food poisoning whilst abroad, then call our specialist litigation solicitors for immediate advice.

Thanks for your comments Franschhoek Accommodation. I'm glad you consider my blog reassuring but I do want to reiterate the potential pitfalls of cheap all inclusive holidays.

It is staggering how cheap some of these holiday deals are which is obviously great for the wallet in these difficult times! I do worry however that there could be a link between cut price holidays and a drop in basic hygiene and safety standards. As a travel law specialist at Pannone LLP, I act on behalf of hundreds of holidaymakers who have sustained gastric illness / food poisoning whilst on holiday, especially those non-Euro locations offering cut price "all-inclusive" holidays deals such as Turkey, Egypt and the Dominican Republic. Although I am all for getting value for money, I wouldn't want this to be at the expense of your health!

Thanks again for your comment and please keep reading and commenting on our blogs. Clare
