Support the Cash Back for Christies Campaign – Sign the Petition

By Kim Harrison in Pannone Personal Injury Team on Thursday, March 12, 2009

As a personal injury solicitor who represents cancer sufferers who have contracted the asbestos related cancer mesothelioma and their families, I was saddened to hear that Manchester’s world famous cancer hospital The Christie, had lost £6.5m of charity cash invested in a failed Icelandic bank, Kaupthing Singer and Friedlander (KSF) last year.  The lost cash had been on the whole raised by ordinary members of the public and was earmarked for two new satellite radiotherapy centres in Salford and Oldham. These schemes will go ahead but the hospital says it will now be unable to pay for planned cancer research projects, including one with Manchester University. Now to add insult to injury, the Christie charity has been informed that the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) has decided not to allow its claim for the £6.5 million back.

The Christie Hospital website states: “The charity will be fighting this all the way and will be applying for a judicial review of the FSCS decision. The charity’s legal advice is that there is a very strong case for the money to be returned and will be doing all it can to get the £6.5 million back”.

“We have a moral and public duty to pursue this approach because this money has been raised by the public, is to be used for fighting cancer and will support future research for the benefit of local people.”

I urge everyone to sign the petition launched by the Manchester Evening News cash_back_for_christie_campaign calling on the Prime Minister to demand that the Financial Services Compensation Scheme reimburses The Christie Hospital with the £6.5 million lost in the Icelandic banking collapse.  The link to the petition is here:here

I couldn't agree with you more Kim. Its a disgrace that the Financial Services Compensation Scheme has not had the compassion and good sense to see that in these difficult times charities should not be made to suffer. I hope lots of people sign the petition.
