Compensation secured for client abused at Broughton Towers Special School

A 35 year old Blackburn man who was sexually abused by a teacher at a special school he was sent to in Broughton-in-Furness near Barrow in the 1970’s and 80’s, has received £10,000 in compensation from Lancashire County Council. Lancashire County Council owned and operated the school even though it is in Cumbria.

The man, who has asked not to be named, was represented by Richard Scorer, a Partner in our specialist team here at Pannone LLP. Our client was sent to the Broughton Towers Special School in 1978 and was there for four years from the age of 9 to 12. He was subjected to appalling sexual abuse from a teacher and has been psychologically scarred by his experiences.

We are extremely pleased that we have helped our client to receive at least some financial recompense for his suffering, but it will never take away the psychological wounds he has.

The school hit the headlines in 1981 after an inquiry was launched in to reports that the school had locked children in a bare windowless and unheated punishment cell overnight. Lancashire County Council sent a number of children to the school throughout the 70’s and early 80’s and we would be very interested to hear from former pupils or parents of children who may have suffered similar abuse. It is disturbing to think that abuse may have taken place at BroughtonTowers, a special school for vulnerable children, which is why it is important to thoroughly investigate the allegations made.

If you have any enquiries about this particular school or want advice regarding bringing a claim for sexual abuse or assault please contact Richard Scorer or myself on 0800 0384 384 during business hours
