In America 14 states have passed a law that requires motorists to leave a minimum gap of 3 ft when passing a cyclist. The prospect of a similar law here is being raised by various cycling groups.
I am usually sceptical about most things that we import from the US but feel it is worth highlighting this petition which is calling for the same law here. Details of the petition can be found below;

While anything which raises awareness about safer cycling can only be a good thing I do wonder whether such a law in this country would actually make any significant improvement to road safety. The Highway Code already requires motorists to leave sufficient space for cyclists although it does not provide a specific definition of sufficient.
Furthermore, it seems that this type of law would be almost impossible to enforce at a practical level.
The petition closes in January but I for one doubt it will result in any new law here.
